Set in 2 sizes of rotunda gothic types, Prüss types 2 (180G) and 3 (90G), with spaces left (some with and some without printed guide letters) for manuscript initials (1 8-line, 2 7-line, 4 6-line, 3 5-line and numerous 3- and 4-line). From the beginning to h3r these spaced have been filled in with manuscript lombardic initials in red and the text has been rubricated (the first fifth of the book). Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden (beechwood?) boards by an Augsburg bindery (Eindbanddatenbank workshop w002998, active ca. 1488-1497). [3], 272 ll. Full description

Amsterdam, 1783. Twelve pen and ink wash drawings (each ca. 8 x 6.5 cm) in subtle shades of grey and sepia. All 12 drawings mounted on a single contemporary stiff paper support (44 x 61 cm), neatly arranged in three rows of four, each with a border of lines drawn around it in ink. A contemporary pencil inscription below the lower right drawing reads "S. Fokke Amsterdam 1712-1784". Another in a later hand in the lower right corner of the support reads "S. Fokke". Mid- or late-18th-century gold-tooled French(?) red goatskin morocco, the spine with a dark green gold-tooled morocco label in the 2nd of 6 compartments, gold fillets on the board edges, gold-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges, French marbled endpapers. [Cologne, Heinrich Quentell, ca. 1493/97]. Small (Chancery) 4to (20.5 x 14.5 cm). With a large woodcut (10.0 x 8.8 cm) on the title-page: depicting a teacher (Pope Gregory the Great ca. 600 CE, declared a saint in 1295) with a dove on his shoulder (his attribute), seated behind a lectern with an open book, instructing two of his pupils, seated before him, each with a book in his hands.Recent marbled paper over boards by the Geneva bookbinder Jean-Luc Honegger (b. 1953) who set up his atelier ca. 1978 (signed with his "honegger" stamp in blue ink at the foot of the back paste-down), sewn on 3 recessed supports, the marbled paper in an antique spot pattern (see Wolfe 162-163) with black spots on unusually fine-grained grey Stormont spots and with veins in red, turquoise, orange, dark blue and white, black morocco spine label with the title in gold roman capitals, reading up the spine. Part one with a vignette on the title-page, the preface with a headpiece and initial, a full-page allegorical engraving of the church signed: "Johann Ulrich Kraus del. et Scul.", and 70 numbered (1-70) plates; part 2 with a vignette on the title-page, a full-page engraving of the apostles and their symbols "simbolum apostolorum" signed: "Johann Ulrich Kraus del. et Scul.", and 50 numbered (71-120) plates. The vignettes, the initial and all engravings are beautifully coloured and heightened with gold. Contemporary speckled calf, gold-tooling on boards, gold-tooled decorations on spine, red title-label with title in gold on spine, gilt edges.
