Second copy located of a remarkable example of 19th-century botanical research methods, issued by the Genootschap voor Landbouw en Kruidkunde (Society for Agriculture and Herbology) in Utrecht, the Netherlands. This society was founded in 1841 with the goal of representing the interests of and generally promoting agriculture, animal husbandry, timber cultivation, horticulture, and herbology in the Dutch province of Utrecht. The society was managed by a committee counting 6 members: mr. P.J.J. Ram, F.H.J. van der Hoop, H. van Lunteren, jhr. G.J. Beeldsnijder van Voshol, dr. J.J. Burgerhoudt, and F.W. Selle. They subsequently invited J.H. Schober to take up the position of secretary. It is Schober's name appearing at the bottom of the general introduction in the present publication, asking members of the society to participate in the observation of certain plants in order to gain knowledge regarding the influence of slight differences in climate on the development these plants.
The present list was printed and distributed to help with the observation of certain changes in the listed plants, such as the growth of leaves and flowers, the ripening of fruits, and the falling of leaves. Members of the Utrecht Agricultural Society were invited to fill out the provided list with their detailed observations and send the completed list back to the society in November of a certain year. While the present list does not mention a year of publication, it will have been printed and published after 1841 - the year the society was founded - and before 1900, as the final page asks the observer to fill in the place they carried out their observations, their name, and the year with "18.." pre-printed.
Works such as the present list are prime examples of "practical publications", meant to be used, maybe archived (when containing relevant information for contemporary further research), and otherwise discarded after use. We have traced only one other example of this list, which is held by the library of the Utrecht University.
The wrappers are very slightly creased, internally very slightly foxed. Otherwise in very good condition. WorldCat 1144935374 (1 copy); for more information on the society, see H. Siemes, Anderhalve eeuw aanwakkeren and the society's archive now kept at "Het Utrechts Archief" (640 Utrechts landbouwgenootschap U.L.G.).
