Rare first edition of a treatise on the medicines used by surgeons written for future practitioners by Maximilian Stoll (1742-1787), a famous Austrian physician who was originally trained as a theologian, with his interests later turning to medicine. In 1776 he attained a professorship at the University of Vienna. Soon afterwards, he succeeded Anton de Haen (1704-1776) as the director of the Wiener Klinik. Stoll is remembered for his epidemiological and systematic approach to medicine. He stressed the importance of knowing the clinical details of a patient's history, and installed a practice of keeping daily progress records of patients.
The present work, written in Latin, remained in manuscript until Johann Gottfried Essig (1757-1806), a physician at Augsburg, translated it into German and published it in 1789, two years after Stolls death. In his preface Essig says; ... die übersetzung so geliefert zu haben, so wie ich sie im Manuskript gefunden .... Another translation, under the title Abhandlung über die praktische Arzneymittellehr (Für chirurgen) was published in Regensburg in 1834.
