First French edition, translated by J. Polyander à Kerckhove of Der Griecken opganck ende onderganck, by Andreas Demetrius, first published at Dordrecht in 1599. The author, Andreas Demetrius, was a Protestant minister at Antwerp as early as 1568. After the fall of the city, in 1585, he first went to Frankfurt, and from 1594 he was minister of the Reformed Church at Dordrecht, where he was highly respected for his religious moderation and his humanist contribution to education. He died in 1607. From the privilege at the end, both by Henri, the King of France, and by the Dutch States General, we learn the name of the publisher and printer, respectively Isaac Jansz. Canin and Guillaume Guillemot.
