With 16 lithographed plates in the atlas volume showing the anatomy of horses, including 13 with movable parts, all in colour, the text volume contains 172 illustrations in the text by Édouard Cuyer. Contemporary half blue calf (or sheepskin?), marbled sides, with the title lettered in gold on the spine. XXIV, 703, [1 blank]; 44, [4] pp. and 16 lithographed plates.

Elaborately illustrated and encyclopaedic work on horses by the veterinarian Eugène Alix (dates unknown). All aspects of the horse are described, for example their appearance, different races, their reproduction, their entire anatomy and organs, etc. It is illustrated with anatomical colour plates containing movable parts by Édouard Cuyer (1852-?), painter and anatomist at the National Art Academy at Paris and professor in anatomy at the Art Academy at Rouen.
The blue leather around the spine is rubbed, some foxing and browning throughout, a previous owner's inscription has been removed from the blank free flyleaf in the text volume by tearing the corner of the page off and with a small tear in pp. I and II, the hinges of most of the plates in the atlas volume are reinforced with white tape, plate VI in the atlas volume is bound at the end of the work.
